Shallow optically active structural defect in wurtzite GaN epilayers grown on stepped 4H-SiC substrates
Shallow optically active structural defect in wurtzite GaN epilayers grown on stepped 4H-SiC substrates was investigated. The GaN epilayers grown with plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy were optically characterized by photoluminescence and excitation spectra. Results showed that the localized states which were induced by the structural defect located about 100 meV above the maximum valence band of GaN.published_or_final_versio
Direct observation of a Ga adlayer on a GaN(0001) surface by LEED Patterson inversion
A low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) Patterson function (PF) with multiple incident angles is used to obtain three-dimensional interatomic information of hexagonal GaN(0001) grown on a 6H-SiC(0001)-√3 x √3 surface. A Ga-Ga atomic pair between the Ga adlayer and the terminating Ga layer is observed in the LEED PF. This provides direct experimental evidence to support the structural model proposed by first-principles calculations. The LEED PF also shows that the GaN film has a hexagonal structure and the surface has single-bilayer steps.published_or_final_versio

Dramatic escalation in metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular risk in a Chinese population experiencing rapid economic development
Background
Metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) increases the incidence of cardiovascular disease. Information on changes in prevalence of MetSyn in developing countries is limited. This study aims to compare MetSyn prevalence and its associated vascular risk over the period between 2002 and 2010 in a population which has had the world’s fastest economic development over the past three decades.
Methods
Two health surveys were conducted by using the multistage cluster random sampling method in a Chinese population of 85 million in southern China. The participants received a full medical check-up, including measurement of blood pressure (BP), obesity indices, fasting lipids and glucose levels. Data describing socio-economic status and lifestyle factors were also collected through interview. Metabolic syndrome was defined in accordance with the International Diabetes Federation criteria.
Results
A total of 3,561 participants from Survey 2010 were included in the data analysis. Women had a significantly higher prevalence of MetSyn than men. Comparison between the two surveys shows that age-standardized prevalence of MetSyn increased fourfold (from 5.4% in 2002 to 21.3% in 2010) in those ≧ 20 years. Among the MetSyn components, prevalence of hyperglycaemia has increased most (from 9.1% to 53.1%). The age-standardized prevalence of central obesity, hypertension, hypertriglyceridaemia and low HDL-cholesterol increased from 13.5% to 25.4%, from 23.6% to 40.8%, from 12.1% to 17.4% and from 32.1% to 71.1%, respectively. Differences between rural and urban residents in the prevalence in MetSyn and its components narrowed in 2010.
Conclusions
Cardiovascular risk escalated dramatically in this population between 2002 and 2010. The escalation may relate to the rapid economic development, which led to accelerating changes in nutrition, lifestyle, and socio-economic status. Our findings suggest that health transition in rapidly developing second- and third-world countries may be much faster than what has been observed in Western countries.published_or_final_versio
Development of specific PCR assays for the detection of Cryptocaryon irritans
Cryptocaryon irritans is one of the most important protozoan pathogens of marine fish, causing the “white spot” disease and posing a significant problem to marine aquaculture. In the present study, a C. irritans-specific reverse primer (S15) was designed based on the published sequence of the second internal transcribed spacer (ITS-2) of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) of C. irritans and used together with the conserved forward primer P1 to develop a specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for direct, rapid, and specific detection of C. irritans. The specificity of these primers was tested with both closely and distantly related ciliates (Pseudokeroronpsis rubra, Pseudokeroronpsis carnae, Euplotes sp. 1, Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, Pseudourostyla cristata, and Paramecium caudaium), and only C. irritans was detected and no product was amplified from any other ciliates examined in this study using the specific primer set P1-S15. The specific PCR assay was able to detect as low as 45 pg of C. irritans DNA and a nested PCR assay using two primer sets (P1/NC2, P1/S15) increased the sensitivity, allowing the detection of a single C. irritans. The species-specific PCR assays should provide useful tools for the diagnosis, prevention, and molecular epidemiological investigations of C. irritans infection in marine fish
In situ revelation of a zinc-blende InN wetting layer during Stranski-Krastanov growth on GaN(0001) by molecular-beam epitaxy
Indium nitride (InN) exists in two different structural phases, the equilibrium wurtzite (w) and the metastable zinc-blende (zb) phases. It is of scientific interest and practical relevance to examine the crystal structure of the epifilms during growth. In this paper, we use Patterson function inversion of low-energy electron diffraction I-V curves to reveal the preferential formation of zinc-blende InN wetting layer during the Stranski-Krastanov growth on GaN(0001). For three-dimensional islands nucleated afterwards on top of the wetting layer and for thick InN films, the equilibrium wurtzite structure is observed instead. This in situ revelation of the InN lattice structure is confirmed by ex situ transmission electron microscopy studies. Finally, the formation of zb-InN layer on w-GaN is explained in terms of the strain in the system. © 2005 The American Physical Society.published_or_final_versio
